For any company dependent on the Internet for its livelihood, the spectre of a million hijacked computers armed with malicious intent and poised to strike is an appalling vista. In February 2000 ecommerce giants, Amazon and eBay fell victim to a denial-of-service attack (DDoS). In December 2010, MasterCard was also compromised by a DDoS attack. According to security company McAfee, "In the last three months of 2009, about 1,095,000 computers in China were hacked, and 1,057,000 in the United States - this on top of the 10 million or so machines already infected in each country. An estimated $1 trillion in intellectual property was stolen worldwide in 2008 through hacking." DDoS attacks cause havoc and there are reactive and proactive ways to counter this threat. 2011 - The Year of the Tablet

VoIP Makes Perfect Phone Sense

In these difficult economic times balancing the household or small business budget is a formidable challenge. Increasing take home pay or gaining market share were sound strategies to bridge the gap between income and spending in a buoyant economy. The sluggish economy leaves no other viable budgeting option but to reduce costs. The substantial cost of traditional telephony can be cut by switching to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP in essence is a category of hardware and software that uses the Internet as the transmission medium to make phone calls. These calls can be made computer-to-computer or from any VoIP enabled device to a computer or any regular phone number. VoIP has been available since the 1990s but surprisingly given its cost advantage over traditional telephony; it has failed to replace the telephone in any significant way. This can be explained in part by the scarcity of broadband on which quality VoIP depends.
